Seven ambassadors, organized by the Big Canoe/North Georgia Club, participated in an exchange to Shizuoka, Japan, November 4 to 11. In addition to the four from our club, three from other clubs joined the exchange.

The group was met at the airport in Nagoya, Japan, by a bus chartered by the first exchange, the Friendship Force Club of Shizuoka, headquartered in Shizuoka City. Here are some of the activities planned by the club and carried out with great skill:

  • An arrival covered-dish supper
  • Japanese tea ceremony
  • Meeting with the mayor of Shizuoka City
  • A bus trip around the base of Mount Fuji
  • A visit to hot springs near Mount Fuji
  • Visit to a Shinto shrine and several Buddhist temples
  • Visit to high school and college classrooms
  • A farewell party in an elegant restaurant

The group then traveled by chartered bus to the Friendship Force Club of Mie, headquartered in the city of Tsu. The group was joined by an additional three people, for a total of ten ambassadors. Here are some of the activities at this club:

  • Visits to more Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples
  • Visit to a building of Japanese crafts
  • A combined arrival-farewell party
  • A visit to a pottery factory
  • A visit to a Ninja museum, including demonstrations by Ninja martial-arts experts

Here are some of the activites carried out by individual ambassadors on free days:

  • Visits to Pacific Ocean beaches
  • Visits to the famous Mikimoto Pearl Island
  • A birthday party put on for Janet Bartel (one of the ambassadors), with about twenty guests.
